HHA vs CNA: What's the Difference?

What Is an HHA?

Scope of Practice: Key Differences

The biggest practical difference is where and what you can practice:

  • HHAs are primarily authorized to work in home settings. They focus on personal care and cannot perform most clinical procedures.
  • CNAs can work in nursing homes, hospitals, rehab centers, and more. They have a broader clinical scope.

In many states, an HHA certification also allows you to work in assisted living facilities.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • HHA median hourly wage: ~$15.00/hour
  • CNA median hourly wage: ~$16.50/hour

The pay gap is modest. HHAs who specialize in home care for high-need clients can earn comparable wages to CNAs, especially with overtime and live-in arrangements.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose HHA if:

  • You want to work one-on-one with clients in their homes
  • You prefer a shorter, lower-cost training program
  • You want to start working quickly
  • You value flexibility and independence

Choose CNA if:

  • You want to work in a hospital or nursing home
  • You're considering advancing to LPN or RN eventually (CNA is a common stepping stone)
  • You want a broader clinical skillset
  • You're comfortable in a faster-paced environment

Can You Get Both?

Yes — and many care workers do. In most states, completing an HHA program gives you credit toward CNA certification. If you start as an HHA and want to advance, you often only need to complete the additional CNA training hours rather than starting from scratch.

Both HHA and CNA are excellent entry points into healthcare. HHA is faster and cheaper to certify, and is ideal if you want to work in home care. CNA opens more doors in clinical settings and is a stronger foundation for career advancement.
