Home Health Aide Certification Online Free: What's Actually Possible

The honest answer: HHA certification can be free — but not entirely online. Here's exactly what's available at no cost, what has eligibility requirements, and what you'll need to pay for regardless.

Important: HHA certification cannot be completed 100% online.

Federal law requires a minimum of 16 hours of supervised in-person clinical training. Any program claiming fully-online HHA certification is not state-approved. The exam prep and most of the knowledge training can be done online — but not the clinical hours.

What Is Actually Free

Agency-sponsored training (most common)

Truly Free

Many home care agencies (Visiting Angels, BrightSpring, Maxim Healthcare, Bayada, etc.) provide free HHA training to new hires. You complete the training and then work for them. This is the most common path — tens of thousands of people become certified HHAs this way every year at zero cost.

How it works
  1. Apply for a home health aide position at a local agency
  2. Get hired as a "training employee" or "aide in training"
  3. Complete the agency's state-approved training program (free)
  4. Pass the competency exam (agency may cover the fee)
  5. Start working and earning
Note: You'll typically commit to a minimum employment period (usually 6–12 months) in exchange for free training.

WIOA-funded community college training

Free with eligibility

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) provides grants for low-income adults to get job training in high-demand fields — including HHA/CNA. If you qualify, you can complete a community college HHA program at no cost.

How it works
  1. Visit your local American Job Center (CareerOneStop)
  2. Meet with a career counselor to assess WIOA eligibility
  3. Get approved for a training grant
  4. Enroll in an approved HHA training program at a community college
  5. Complete training and sit your certification exam
Note: Eligibility is based on income, employment status, and other factors. Not everyone qualifies.

Medicaid-funded training programs

Free with eligibility

Some states fund HHA training directly through Medicaid waiver programs. This is especially common in states with Medicaid-funded home and community-based services (HCBS). Contact your state Medicaid office to ask about funded training options.

  1. Contact your state Medicaid or HCBS office
  2. Ask about funded HHA training for Medicaid-eligible individuals
  3. Enroll in an approved program if available

How Many Training Hours Does Your State Require?

You will see free courses advertised as “40 hour” and “75 hour” programmes, and the difference matters more than the price. 75 hours is the federal bar under 42 CFR 484.80 for aides working at a Medicare-certified agency. A state may set its own floor lower than that — and a course built to the lower number will not qualify you at a Medicare agency.

40 hours

7 states

The lowest state floors. Enough to work for a non-Medicare private-duty employer in those states, but short of the federal bar — so it will not transfer to a Medicare-certified agency without topping up.

75 hours

37 states

The 42 CFR 484.80 federal requirement for aides at Medicare-certified agencies, adopted outright by most states. At least 16 of the 75 must be supervised hands-on clinical practice.

80–120 hours

CA, IL, CO and a few others

States that set their own bar above the federal one. California and Illinois both require 120 hours; Colorado requires 80.

Online HHA Certification: What's Possible & What's Not

Can I complete all HHA training online?

No. The federal minimum requires 75 training hours, including at least 16 hours of supervised practical/clinical training with a real patient. This clinical portion cannot be done online. The classroom/knowledge portion can sometimes be done online through a hybrid program, but clinical hours must be in-person.

Can I take the HHA exam online?

The written (knowledge) portion may be taken at a computer-based testing center, but not from home. The skills demonstration — where you perform hands-on patient care tasks in front of an evaluator — must always be done in person. There is no state that allows the skills demonstration to be done remotely.

Are online-only "HHA certifications" legitimate?

Be cautious. Any program claiming to offer a fully online HHA certification that counts for state licensure is likely not legitimate. State-approved programs must include the required clinical hours. If you see a course that skips this, it won't be recognized by employers.
